Venom seals home playoff game, rolls over Dodge City

Wednesday, September 27th, 2017

With a home playoff game on the line, the Amarillo Venom overcame a sluggish start and scored 31 unanswered points in the second half, downing the Dodge City Law 52-35 on Saturday night at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Cal Farley Coliseum.

Trailing 35-21 with eight minutes left in the third quarter, the Venom went on a 31-0 scoring run to secure the second seed in the CIF Southern Division. The victory also guaranteed the Venom’s first home playoff contest since the 2013 Lone Star Football League championship game.

“It doesn’t matter how you start the game, it’s how you finish,” said Venom coach Julian Reese. “We were proud of the guys and how they finished the game. We were challenged coming right out of the gate, but we bounced back. It’s all about getting better with each quarter and each play, and that’s what we did in scoring those 31 points.”

Down by 14 points in the middle of the third period, the Venom (8-4) began their run, which saw quarterback Nate Davis fire a 14-yard touchdown pass to veteran wide receiver Raymond Johnson Jr.

Following a successful onside kick by Randall grad and kicker Jacob Felton, Davis culminated the four-play drive with one-yard touchdown run at the 2:16 mark to even the game at 35 points apiece.

The Law (8-4) attempted to retake the lead, as quarterback Derrick Bernard fended off Venom defensive end Desmond Raiford and linebacker Gary Saylor and threw a downfield pass. However, defensive back Jevin Colbert intercepted the throw, swinging the game’s momentum heavily into Amarillo’s favor.

“All week in practice, Coach has been giving us scramble drills,” Colbert said. “We were facing a running quarterback, so if he gets to running in the backfield, still find your receiver and play pass first. I just listened to my coach, stuck to my key and came up with the pick.”

After a Davis pass to a diving wide receiver/defensive back Julian Walker for the go-ahead score, Felton tabbed another successful onside kick to put the ball back in Venom hands. A 20-yard field goal by Felton, a Venom defensive stop on fourth down and a two-yard touchdown run by fullback Wyreaz Bradley sealed the Amarillo victory.

“It all started with last year,” said Bradley, who rushed for 27 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. “When I decided to come back here, I came back for a reason: I wanted a ring. So I want to do whatever it takes, put the team on my back and lead us to the championship.”

While Davis went 14-of-26 with three touchdowns and one interception, Johnson Jr. and Walker led the Venom receiver corps with nine combined catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, defensive back Jemichael Williams led the team with eight total tackles, as Raiford and defensive lineman Justin Williams each tallied a sack.

Dodge City was led by Bernard and running back Dominique Carson, who racked up a combined 157 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Defensive back Kory Stamps, who played for the Venom earlier this season, captured an interception for the Law.

The Venom will host the Dodge City Law once more at 7:05 p.m. next Saturday at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Cal Farley Coliseum.
